Tomorrow belongs to those who prepare today.
African Proverb
I have already touched on being prepared for whatever you may encounter, whether you are going out for a day of recreation or going out on the town. Being prepared is extremely important and the only safe course of action for the warrior to take. You can prepare for some things at the spur of the moment. For example, if you start to walk out the door and it looks as though it may rain, you can turn back and get your umbrella just in case. Other situations take a bit more preparation in order to be prepared.
Self-defense is one of the things that you need to prepare for well in advance. You can’t decide to go out to a late show, and just before you walk out the door, decide that you need to learn a few self-defense techniques just in case you run into trouble. This is ridiculous. As you know, it takes months or years of constant training to be competent to defend yourself. It is not something that you can put off until you happen to think about the possibility of needing it one night.
Your preparation in the area of self-defense has to be an ongoing process. If you want to be prepared for tomorrow’s surprise encounter, you have to prepare for it today. This is what being prepared actually means. You are preparing now for what may happen sometime down the line. If you find yourself in a situation where you need your skills, they will be ready. If you find that you don’t need them, they are still available to you. Either way, you are prepared. Bohdi Sanders ~ excerpt from the book, WARRIOR: The Way of Warriorhood, pg 31
