Warrior Wisdom II: The Heart & Soul of Bushido

By The Wisdom Warrior On January 8th, 2009

Warrior Wisdom II: The Heart & Soul of Bushido

Warrior Wisdom II is following in the footsteps of the original Warrior Wisdom…It has received some tremendous endorsements included the following from Loren Christensen. Those of you who have any interest at all in martial arts or in the warrior lifestyle will recognize this name, as Loren is one of the biggest authors of martial arts/warrior literature. I have been reading Lorens books for years, and actually have several of his books in my office that I refer back to regularly. I am greatly honored that he has considered Warrior Wisdom II worthy enough to endorse. Here is Loren’s endorsement:

In Warrior Wisdom quote number 54, Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, “Reading makes a full man –Meditation makes a profound man.” Doctor Bohdi Sanders’ insight on this saying is that, “You have to engage your mind and focus while you read…Meditate on the information… Don’t just skim it, but…understand the principles behind what you are reading and be able to apply those principles to your life.” Later he says that this applies to everything that you do, including learning the martial arts. “Do not let your mind wonder off to some other subject. Be in the moment. Focus on the Now. Don’t just go through motions…”

As a practitioner of Zen, I believe that Dr. Sanders nails this quote so simply, yet so profoundly, that I think it should have been placed as Warrior Wisdom quote number 1, to function as a guide as to how to proceed through this most valuable book.

The wisdom sayings and the discussions herein are simplistic yet they are as meaty as a two-inch-thick porterhouse. I like simplicity in the martial arts. If you have read my books on the fighting arts, you know that I nag the reader as to the importance of keeping things uncomplicated. Real fighting is too fast, too furious, too heart rate accelerating, and too adrenaline pumping to employ complex techniques and concepts. I believe the same is true of one’s personal philosophy. It has got to be simple and it has got to be pragmatic. Clearly, Doctor Bohdi Sanders believes this, too.

So don’t race through this book as if you were reading a popular novel. “Meditate on the information,” “be in the moment,” and “…apply [the] principles to your life.” Think about them and discuss them with your partner, your classmates, and with your students. Discuss them with friends outside of the martial arts, too, as they apply to all facets of your life.

Read this book, and then read it again and again and again.
Loren W. Christensen

WOW…Thanks Loren! I think that I will have to frame that endorsement and put it on the wall of my office, just above the stack of Loren’s books that I refer back to again and again!

For those who are interested, Warrior Wisdom II has gone to the printer and will be available in the next couple of weeks. Both Warrior Wisdom books will also be available on cd’s in the upcoming weeks.
